Jack Broome Scholarship

The scholarship began in 2010, an idea past Tualatin Historical Society president Jack Broome. Jack was a great promoter of education. After his four-year tour in the Marines during WW II he received a G.I. bill scholarship at the University of Oregon in architecture which got him started on his long career. He retired from a large Portland firm and became the pro bono architect when the historical society acquired the 1926 Methodist church in 2003. The building was moved in early 2004 onto city property and became the Heritage Center and home of THS today. Jack was “anonymous” in his very large donation to move and restore the center.

Jack realized the historical society needs new and younger people to carry on in future generations. He insisted we must do our part in perpetuating the interest and belief of young people's involvement in history. He met with the board during early 2010 and requested and received approval that THS start its first scholarship of $2000 - which since has grown to $3000 for a qualified student graduating senior from the Tualatin High School.

Jack Broome passed away in June of 2020 at the age of 97. We renamed the scholarship to honor his major contribution to the community and particularly the historical society by naming the scholarship for him. An honor he surely would have not wanted, but we were compelled to do.

Awatif Al-hawani was the recipient of the 14th annual scholarship THS has awarded, recently renamed for Jack Broome whose idea kicked off the honor for a Tualatin High School senior. This year’s award was once again $3,000, all donated by members of the Society separate from our regular budget. Awatif immigrated from Iraq and quickly learned English and has also mastered Spanish. She is an active leader at the school and founded its Muslim and Arabic Society which helps her fellow students understand the differences and similarities of her culture with others. Not only is Awatif in the top 20% of her class academically, she started her own on-line custom art business and worked at Michaels to help pay college expenses. She will be entering Portland State University this fall on a career path in Environmental Engineering.
